Your Ceremony Space

If you (like me) live in a small house and wish to create your own tea ceremony space, it is possible

Just focus on simplicity, intentionality, and cultivating an atmosphere of peace.

Follow these steps and enjoy your very own space.

Create your own ceremony space

Choose the Right Corner or Nook

Look for a quiet, uncluttered space where you feel at ease. It could be a small corner of a room, a window seat, or even a space in your garden (weather permitting).

I have decorated a small altar and sheepskin on the floor for cold or rainy weather, and a furnished pallet in the forest for clear sky days.

Ensure the space has soft, natural light or gentle, warm lighting to set the mood.

Create a Calm Soundscape

If outside noise is a challenge, soft instrumental music, nature sounds, or even a simple chime can set a peaceful tone.

Soundproofing (curtains, rugs, or fabric draping) can also help create an intimate environment.

Define the Space with a Low Table or Mat

A small wooden table or a low tea tray can serve as your centerpiece. Mine is an old apple box, upturned.

A meditation cushion, sheepskin or soft rug, or floor seating can create comfort and grounding.

Personalise with Meaningful Touches

Choose a special teapot, your favorite teacup, or a handcrafted tea bowl to hold presence in your ceremony.

Place a small journal for reflections or an intention card nearby.

If a piece of artwork or a quote inspires your practice, bring it in.

Use a shawl (light in Summer, heavier in cooler months) over your shoulders or as a cocoon.

Bring in Natural Elements

A plant, fresh flowers, or a simple sprig of herbs can help connect the space to nature.

Consider a small bowl of water, a smooth stone, or a candle to symbolise grounding and presence.

Ritualise the Space Before Each Ceremony

3.png

Light a candle, take a deep breath, and set an intention before beginning.

I use a meditation spray with essential oils that signals to my olfactory system that it’s time to go within.

Keep the space sacred by tidying it after each use, so it holds the reverence, stillness and presence you have created.

Acknowledgement of Country

Tea Lady Ceremonies emerged on Bunjalung Land, in the NSW Northern Rivers.

It is my privilege to live, work and raise my family here, to swim in the cool salty ocean that laps against this soil, to frolic with my family in fresh watering holes, to walk barefoot through the forest at the edge of my garden.

This land, belonging to the Arakwal, Minjungbal and Widjabal People, was never ceded. I recognise and celebrate the ongoing connection between land, sky, water and community and the beauty and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. .

I pay my deepest respects to the Traditional Custodians of this land; past, present and emerging.
